What We Are
The Freethinking Times is an independent publication. We have no parent company, no institutional backer, no advertiser relationships, and no political affiliation. We are accountable to our readers and to the evidence.
We publish investigative reporting, analysis, opinion, cultural criticism, and historical context. We cover what we think matters, in the depth it deserves, without the artificial constraints of the daily news cycle or the commercial pressures that shape most media.
Why We Exist
The collapse of independent journalism in the United States and elsewhere is not, in our view, primarily a technological story. It is a political economy story — the result of specific decisions made by specific institutions over several decades, most of which served the interests of consolidated media ownership rather than the public that journalism is supposed to serve.
We exist because we believe that honest, adversarial, intellectually serious journalism is still possible, and still necessary. We believe it requires independence — from corporate ownership, from government favor, from the engagement metrics that have deformed so much of what passes for journalism in the algorithmic era.
What We Stand For
We believe in primary sources over secondhand accounts. We believe in showing our work. We believe in naming causes and assigning responsibility rather than retreating into false balance. We believe that complexity is not an excuse for vagueness, and that clarity is a form of respect for the reader.
We are adversarial toward power — not reflexively, not performatively, but as a matter of what journalism is for. Power that cannot withstand scrutiny should be scrutinized. Institutions that make claims should be asked for evidence. Officials who make decisions that affect people's lives should be asked to account for them.
What We Will Not Do
We will not publish sponsored content, native advertising, or any material whose publication is contingent on payment. We will not accept advertising from industries we cover. We will not allow funders or donors — if we ever have them — to influence editorial decisions.
We will not present opinion as news, or news as opinion. We will label what we publish clearly. When we get something wrong, we will correct it prominently and without equivocation.
