How We're Funded

We accept no advertising, no sponsored content, no brand partnerships, and no funding from organizations with interests in our coverage areas. The Freethinking Times is supported entirely by readers, people who read what we publish and decide it's worth keeping alive.

That's the whole model. No tiers, no paywalls, no members-only content. Everything published here is free to read. Reader support is not a transaction, it's a decision that independent, adversarial, intellectually serious journalism is worth existing in the world.

Where Your Support Goes

Support given to the publication covers operating costs: hosting and infrastructure, public-records and FOIA fees, archival and software subscriptions, and the occasional reporting expense. The publication does not currently pay contributors a fee or salary; reader contributions to the operating fund are not redistributed to writers. A small, consistent readership willing to contribute is what makes it possible to turn down anything that would compromise editorial independence.

Support given directly to individual authors goes entirely to those authors. Authors manage their own reader support through their own accounts, the publication does not take a cut. Tips through an author's link are the only compensation a contributor receives for a piece, there is no fee, salary, or honorarium from the publication on top of that. If a piece of writing mattered to you and you want the person who wrote it to be able to write more, supporting them directly is the most efficient way to do that.

Two Ways to Support

The Publication

Support The Freethinking Times

Contributions to the publication fund its operating costs, hosting, public-records fees, infrastructure, and reporting expenses. No portion goes to individual authors; this is the publication's operating fund, not a contributor pool.

Individual Authors

Support a Contributor

Authors who accept reader support do so through their own accounts. The publication receives nothing from author tips, 100% goes directly to the writer. Tips are the only compensation a contributor receives for a piece, the publication does not pay a fee on top. Look for the support badge on any article byline or author page.

Other ways to help

Share specific pieces. When an article is worth reading, send it to one person who would find it genuinely useful. Not broadcast, targeted. A good article landing in front of the right reader is worth more than a hundred passive impressions.

Link to us. If you write, blog, or maintain any kind of online presence, linking to pieces you found valuable is how independent publications build the search presence that brings new readers.

Write a letter. Reader correspondence published in the Letters section is part of the publication's editorial content. A thoughtful response to something we've published contributes to the work directly. Write a letter.

Tell us what we're missing. The best editorial tip is a story that matters and isn't being told. If you know of something that deserves investigation, send us a tip.

The Freethinking Times does not accept advertising, sponsored content, affiliate fees, or funding from organizations with interests in our coverage areas. Reader support is the only kind we take. Individual authors process their own support independently; the publication does not take a percentage. The publication does not currently pay contributors a fee or salary.
